Blizzard will be reducing World of Warcrafts purchasable game time options to a single 60 days option

Blizzard will be reducing World of Warcraft’s purchasable game time options from either 30, 90, or 180 days of game time to a single 60 days option. This consolidation of the options should make it easier for those looking to purchase game time but it may be frustrating for those who prefer to play in 30 day increments or gift game time to others.

The main intention from this change is that Blizzard most likely wants to have active subscriptions rather than allowing people to purchase game time “on-demand.” This is already proven to be an effective change for Blizzard, while it may lead to further indirect complications. That is forgetting and leaving the subscription active, leading to unintentional recursive subscription without even being aware of. Players have already started rebelling against the changes, and we are looking forward to seeing Blizzard’s response (if there is going to be any).

To be clear, this doesn't affect World of Warcraft subscriptions, which can still be purchased on a recurring monthly basis (or in increments of 90 and 180 days). Though subscriptions are probably the most common way to access World of Warcraft, many players prefer to buy game time as a once-off purchase. It's great option if you don't play consistently, as you can just buy a little bit of game time whenever you need it rather than committing to a monthly fee that potentially gets wasted. Purchasing game time like this is also preferable to a lot of players in different countries where credit cards are not always a common payment method. At the end of the day, though, it's just nice to have more options for how you pay.

The key thing here, however, is that some percentage of players who only mean to play for a month will likely forget to cancel their subscription before they’re charged for the second, and then perhaps feel compelled to keep playing.

Blizzard’s official explanation isn’t particularly helpful: “We recently conducted a review on the available services in all currencies”, the company wrote in an email announcement. “Based on this, we have decided to alter the available Game Time options in the Blizzard Shop. As of today, the Game Time options of 30, 90, and 180 days have been removed and Game Time is only available as a purchase of 60 Days.”

Why the change, then? I imagine Blizzard was just trying to make things easier on their accountants while at the same attempting to encourage more people to subscribe instead of purchasing game time; subscriptions provide a much more reliable stream of income to a company than at-will purchases. 60 days appears to be a sweet spot for game time purchases, as Final Fantasy XIV has the exact same play time options. Of course, the 180 day option was likely largely unused these days, as it no longer provided a free mount or similar that the 180 day subscription does.
